Mounted Officer Training
In 2013, I was contacted by the East Bay Mounted Police Department about training for the unit. One of their officers had been in a serious horse related accident and they were looking for some help. The mounted officers transfer into the unit with little to no riding experience. The officers and horses are exposed to large crowds, traffic, loud noises, flares, trail obstacles, helicopters and gunfire in a controlled environment and then out in the field. During my time with the unit, we’ve purchased new horses, trained the existing horses and created a riding and training program. In my time as the trainer for the unit we’ve had a perfect safety record.
In 2014 I was asked to be the trainer for the San Francisco Mounted Police Department. It is a dynamic and energetic environment and the majority of our training was in Golden Gate Park and the surrounding areas. I trained the new officers, helped locate and evaluate new horses and at times would take the horses into full time training in Livermore.
In 2018 I attended a 40 hour POST certified Mounted Basic Training class in Norco, CA. I am a current member of the California Mounted Officers Association. I teach a 3 week training class for sworn officers designed to give them a solid foundation as they transfer into the Mounted Unit. I also teach sensory clinics for the general public with an emphasis on horsemanship and correct riding.
